Energy-Saving Tips for Your Home this Fall

There are several simple energy-saving (and money-saving) things you can do this fall to help you save on your energy bills.

Unseen Dirt is Costing You Money

Dirty air filters in your home’s HVAC system makes it work harder and use more energy. Your system’s filters might be in the duct system or in the equipment. Have a technician from Young’s Home Comfort inspect your system before winter to ensure your HVAC is in working order and all filters are clean or replaced to maximize efficiency.

Air filters should be changed every 3 months. Clean filters will help keep dust particles from accumulating in your home’s heating and cooling system, which can lead to expensive repairs or maintenance issues.

Autumn is a good time to wipe clean your ceiling fan blades so any of that dust is eliminated and not recirculated. Once fall temperatures begin to drop significantly, switch the direction of your ceiling fans so that they’re pushing warm air down for the winter.

Air Leaks Cost Money

You pay good money for AC or heating so you can maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. Don’t let cool air escape from your home in warm weather and don’t let warm air escape in the winter!

Seal any ductwork that’s in your attic, basement, or in the crawl spaces of your house. Mastic tape or foil tape can be used as a duct sealant. We do not recommend using duct tape as it may not last long. Any ductwork that’s easily accessed, seal it with the proper tape and add insulation, if possible.

Check for leaks around windows and use caulk sealant to eliminate excessive energy loss. Replace weatherstripping, if needed.

Monitor That Thermostat

A programmable thermostat is an ideal way to help conserve energy in your home. It allows you to adjust your home’s temperature for times when you are sleeping or away from home, lowering energy needs during those periods.

If you have a manual thermostat, you can still save money by adjusting your home’s temperature a mere 5 to 8 degrees (lower in the winter and higher in the summer, of course).

Save with an HVAC Tune-up

Proper maintenance by a qualified technician is one of the best ways you can ensure that your home’s HVAC system is working efficiently instead of secretly siphoning money from you. A full system checkup is ideal in the spring and the fall is one of the most important steps you can take to prevent future problems.

How Old is Your HVAC?

Is your home heating and cooling system more than a decade old? It may be time to purchase a new system. With a newer, more energy-efficient model, it could end up paying for itself in just a few years.
